comic relief

i just received a whole lot of papers from the kids as it is the end of the school year. it's sometimes scary how many worksheets some of these teachers give out. overall i think it's a safe bet to assume that the better the teacher the less worksheets i see coming home. cole has done a lot of worksheets this year. ho hum. at least he liked the lady. one thing she does that i do like, however, is that every monday for homework the kids have to write a weekend report. they are usually short, but give a good opportunity to free write. there isn't enough of that going on at this school. but i digress...

the weekend report has become my favorite homework day (admittedly i have non-favorite days as well that usually involve math i've long since forgot). and writing with cole has been so much fun. he has such an incredible vocabulary, a seriously wild imagination (think Roald Dahl here), and a wicked awesome sense of humor.

and yet he always says that he hates writing. bah! i'm convinced he's a someday newberry award winner so i've made it a life mission to open his eyes to his potential in this department despite his diatribes about how awful writing is.  one day he will love it...i hope anyway.

so here's his last and final weekend report that he had to write for the year. just wanted to share cause i loved it so much:

Cole   May 23, 2011

You'll never believe what I did over the weekend! I went to spend $200 Book Bucks at Taco Bell! And...hold a second...I got to bike there!! It was...hold on another second...devastatingly awesome!!

isn't that fun? and original? i mean, come on...devastatingly awesome? how many second graders really use words like that in their everyday speaking? cole is always listening to words and trying them out in sentences and such. i love it. he'll try a new phrase or saying out and then look at me like, "did that work?"

hmmm...now i'm wondering why he's soooo good at hearing new words and phrases, but not so good at hearing requests from his mother to take out trash or clean up messes. interesting.

i often tell cole that he is God's comic relief gift to me. each of my kids has a talent or gift that really lightens my heart and brings me so much happiness. cole's gift is his wit and humor.

what on earth did i do without cole for all those years before he came to us?
