chas had another successful season of lacrosse this year. somehow he ended up playing goalie and really fell in love with it. turns out he's also really good at it. at the end of each game the coach gives one of the played balls to the most valuable player for that day's game. chas ended up with two balls this season and was very excited by the recognition.
the first ball came while playing for the U13 team, which was particularly important to him because...well, i think he proved to himself and the other teammates that he could hang with the big boys. and let me tell you...there is a huge difference between a 10 year old boy and a 12 year old boy. wow! i was honestly scared for him the first time he played with them. they towered over him! good thing he's got quick reflexes :).
the second ball came after the last game. chas held off many attempted goals that game as it was a pretty evenly matched game between the two teams. i believe the final score was 7 to 3 with Alameda Attack winning the game.
this experience of lacrosse has been great for all of us. i've been so impressed by our coaches ability to teach these boys a sport most of them had never played until last year. these men don't yell at our boys, they coach them. it makes sitting on the sidelines during the games so enjoyable for me and dev (except for when the opposing team's coaches are yelling at their players! ugh!). and it keeps chas interested in the sport and more importantly, interested in improving by practicing.
up til now chas has dabbled in many sports. he's still young and so i have never felt to push him to stay in any one sport (although i'd hoped for an interest in soccer! i love to watch it and it's such a cheap sport. let me tell you...lacrosse is NOT a cheap sport!). i just keep waiting for him to find the thing he loves enough to stick with it. i can't be positive yet, but i felt like maybe he found that this year playing goalie in lacrosse. it seemed different...he seemed more invested and committed. he took initiative with practicing on his own and seemed to really own the sport and the spot on the field. it was cool to see that happen.
will chas grow up playing lacrosse then? are we going to be a lacrosse family? who knows. life never ceases to surprise me. of all the sports i envisioned this never came to mind even though it seems like a perfect fit for our family.
time will tell, huh? in the meantime...
can't wait til next season...
